Splendid Advice

Wedding traditions are perfectly fine, but, in the end, they do not define who you are – and many of them are completely outdated as well. Fortunately, modern wedding etiquette leaves brides and grooms with plenty of freedom to choose which of the traditions they want to follow.

What are some of the wedding customs that are frequently skipped these days? Read on and find out more.

• The white dress. No, you really don’t have to wear a white dress. You can, of course, and it will be gorgeous. But a blush pink, blue, gold or even black dress can look just as stunning too. Wear what makes you feel happy and comfortable because, in the end, this is your Big Day.
• The bouquet and garter toss. These can be fun moments at a wedding, but some people may find them overly superstitious and overused – so it’s really no wonder that many brides and grooms choose to leave aside this particular tradition.
• Having your dad walk you down the aisle. Your mom, your brother, your uncle or even your future husband himself can walk you down the aisle. And if you feel like it, you can even walk down the aisle alone (and meet your fiancé halfway through, for example).
• The wedding cake. No, you don’t have to have a wedding cake at your wedding. As long as you feel better having any other type of dessert, you should go for it. From cupcake towers to homemade pies, there’s a myriad of options to choose from – and they are all so, so delicious!
